A Brief History
SET (Cardiff) Ltd was formed in May 1974 and was taken over by current Chairman Mr P.G. Amos in 1976. From a small corner shop in Wyndham Arcade, Cardiff, selling calculators, typewriters and ribbons, SET moved to larger premises on St Mary Street, Cardiff. Here SET continued to grow, selling to commercial business and increasing the range to include word-processors. The growth of the company continued with the introduction of computers during the early 1980's and SET employed trained service engineers. In 1988 SET moved into its current head office in the old Kardor flour buildings in Penarth Road, Cardiff where we concentrate on our core business of supplying industry and commerce.

In 1982 SET opened a shop in Swansea to expand its business in Wales. Once again the business consistently grew and this gave the company a sound base in West Wales with a shop opening also in Haverfordwest. After 25 years in the High Street in Swansea, SET moved, in 2007, to bigger and better purpose built premises in Garngoch Industrial Estate which provides a better environment for their customers and staff with on-site parking, better access from the M4 and includes a brand new furniture showroom.
In 1984 SET expanded further by opening a stationery department in a small 1000 sq. ft. warehouse in Portmanmoor Road, Cardiff. A team of 3 sales personnel covered areas from Cardiff to Port Talbot to Merthyr Tydfil. Sales of business machines and computers remained the core of the business. SET outgrew these premises and moved to Penarth Road in Cardiff in 1988. The new premises gave SET 20,000 sq. ft. available for extra sales, administration and warehouse personnel.
Since 1990 SET (Office Supplies) Ltd has grown to become the leading office supplier in Wales. Annual sales have reached in excess of £17 million. With further need for expansion the warehouse relocated from Penarth Road to larger 26,000 sq. ft. premises in 2002, approximately 1 mile away at Llandough Trading Estate, conveniently located for easy access to the major routes in Wales. There SET has the largest office supplies warehouse in Wales right on your doorstep. We offer over 20,000 products that are available for a FREE next day delivery service. |

SET continued its growth year on year, and in 1994 expanded its operations East by purchasing a local Bristol business, W A Ross Ltd. This company was originally founded in 1826, therefore SET decided to keep the original name, ROSS Office Supplies. When purchased the turnover was £180,000 per annum and it has now grown to a turnover in excess of £4 million.
With the recent move in 2002 of the warehouse and distribution centre, this has allowed SET to increase the stock levels significantly, helping its buying power to become even more competitive throughout the UK. SET has offices in Cardiff, Swansea, Haverfordwest and Bristol, We currently employ over 150 people from the local workforce, all of whom are trained to maintain our high standards and offer the best possible service to our customer base.

In 1986 SET Office Supplies supplied Lifeline Wales, a database of organ donors with a complete network of Apricot computers. These were used for a computerised organ registry throughout Wales, local intensive care units could check the database using these personal computers and modems, supplied by us, for potential organ donors who had registered with the scheme. One year after launching Lifeline Wales 100,000 potential donors had been registered*.
Princess Diana, the Princess of Wales, was invited to launch the computerised network. SET engineers programmed the computers so Lifeline Wales could be launched by the touch of a button as shown opposite. Also shown in the photograph is Ruth Madoc, the welsh television actress and Mr Max Gabe Wilkinson, the director of Lifeline Wales.
